Upcycled Farmhouse Succulents — Perfect for Mother’s Day

Anytime I hear “Farmhouse” I get nervous I’m about to spend too much money on something that looks old. Most of the time it’s a reproduction of something I’m fairly certain my grandparents had.

On a recent trip to the thrift store, I grabbed these two older kitchen pans. The larger one on the bottom is a roasting pan (no lid to be found) and a colander. If they had more that I could use I would have grabbed them too… but I thought these would be perfect to use as planters. And so much cheaper.

The colander was $.49 and the roasting pan was $2.99 – of course, I had to check out the kids’ books while I was there. I grabbed a handful of those too. I love that educators get a 25% off discount on Tuesdays… so I’ve been going more often. Hopefully, I will add on to my thrifty home decor. Keep your eyes peeled while you are thrifting.. you never know what you’ll see.

If I could buy every single succulent at the store I would. I think they are the perfect plant for me. They don’t need much and are super sturdy. I kill most plants. I’m not saying these will survive, but they will survive much longer than most others.

I love having my oldest son there with me too. I gave him ownership of this project and let him pick out which ones we bought. I just said how many little ones and how many big ones. Any variety of these look great together, so it perfect for your littles to help with.

Although I’m not sure the cart was quite big enough. Hahaha.

Because these are sturdy… I let the boys plant them. I was there to help of course.

I love watching my boys play with dirt. I still love playing with dirt. It’s a great conversation to have about the importance of water and sun and soil. This is a reoccurring theme in elementary science so the earlier they have this concept down, the better.

I picked up this watering can with the succulents and it has been such a hit. It is the perfect size for them and I don’t have to worry about water splashing around. It is also their “job” to water the succulents.

This was a terrific project before the weather gets too hot in South Florida. While we are loving all the improvements we are making to the back yard, my allergies are not. Have you ever noticed the older you get, the more allergies you seem to have. That’s what’s happening to me anyway. Grass and pollen never used to be a problem for me. Don’t even get me started now.

I’m so happy I’ve found Similasan Allergy Eye Relief, and more excited that they have all natural active ingredients. It’s safe for everyone to use and I love that because it helps save money since we can all use it. I don’t have to buy anything special for the boys.

I am able to stay outside longer and actually get my hands dirty when I don’t have to worry about my red eyes or what is going to make my eyes itchy. I can focus on playing with the kids and my budding green thumb.

I absolutely love how these turned out. I also love that I didn’t pay an arm and a leg for the “farmhouse” label. Two things I love affordable home projects and eyes that aren’t itchy. It’s amazing how two flowers, the Euphrasia, and the Sabadilla plants, help relieve my outdoor allergies.
